Description This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to facilitate an early, safe and sustainable return to work for the injured person by developing and implementing appropriate strategies.This unit may apply to job roles subject to licensing, legislative, regulatory or certification requirements so Commonwealth, State or Territory requirements should be confirmed with the relevant body.

Learning Outcomes and Application This unit applies to injured person support roles in the personal injury management sector.

Elements of Competency Performance Criteria              
Element: Determine the needs of the injured person
  • Collect and analyse relevant information in consultation with injured person and other relevant parties to determine the needs of the injured person
  • Identify internal and external relevant parties to assist with determining and meeting injured person's needs
  • Consult with relevant parties to determine extent of the physiological and/or psychological impact of the injury on the person
  • Develop and maintain appropriate and accurate records of the injured person's needs
       
Element: Facilitate the return to work planning process
  • Identify potential barriers to return to work in consultation with the injured person and relevant parties
  • Facilitate case conferences as required to determine appropriate return to work strategy for the injured person in line with their needs and perceived barriers
  • Develop sustainable return to work objectives for the injured person that reflect their needs and intended goal in consultation with them and other relevant parties
       
Element: Facilitate implementation of the return to work strategy
  • Make appropriate referrals to health and rehabilitation professional services in line with the injured person's needs and set goals and objectives
  • Liaise and record discussions with relevant parties as required to ensure agreed return to work strategy is progressed as planned
  • Provide guidance, support and education on the return to work process to relevant parties as required
       
Element: Monitor and review the effectiveness of return to work strategy
  • Routinely collect, analyse and review information on the effectiveness of return to work strategy in meeting the person's needs, reflecting current best practice as well as set goals and objectives
  • Seek advice and feedback from relevant parties when goals are not being met and adapt the plan to reflect any changes required

Context of and specific resources for assessment

Assessment must ensure:

competency is demonstrated in the context of the work environment and conditions specified in the range statement either in a relevant workplace or a closely simulated work environment

access to and the use of a range of common office equipment, technology, software and consumables

access to organisation records

access to organisation policies and procedures.

Method of assessment

A range of assessment methods should be used to assess practical skills and knowledge. The following examples, in combination, are appropriate for this unit:

evaluating an integrated activity, which combines the elements of competency for the unit, or a cluster of related units of competency

observing processes and procedures in workplaces

verbal or written questioning on underpinning knowledge and skills

evaluating samples of work

accessing and validating third party reports

setting and reviewing workplace projects and business simulations or scenarios.

Assessment Tasks

The range statement relates to the unit of competency as a whole. It allows for different work environments and situations that may affect performance. Essential operating conditions that may be present with training and assessment (depending on the work situation, needs of the candidate, accessibility of the item, and local industry and regional contexts) may also be included.

Injured persons may include:

persons injured during the course of employment

persons injured in transport related accidents.

Relevant parties may include:

health care and rehabilitation professionals

internal stakeholders to the case such as injury management advisers and technical managers

other external third parties such as lawyers

the employer, return to work coordinators and other employees

the injured person's family.

Accurate records may include:

reports on consultations with the relevant stakeholders such as the injured person and their family, the employer, health professionals, and other service providers

independent medical examination reports medical reports (e.g. certificate of capacity)

reviews of medical reports and relevant assessments.

Consultation may include:
